To be a passenger is to be at someone else’s mercy, so to speak. You are along for the ride. Like most words, this has both the literal and physical meanings.
Many years ago when I did some traveling, I spent many hours being a passenger using different modes of transportation. It was great because there was a chance to interact with people and see all of the people who were going in the same direction as yourself but would soon scatter to their different destinations.
